Nice

nice ferriesNice is a city in the south of France located on the Mediterranean coast and is a major tourist centre. It is a leading resort on the French Riviera and was founded by the Greeks.
Nice enjoys mild and sunny weather throughout the year. Its mediterranean climate allows rather warm summers and mild winters, with temperatures rarely reaching the freezing point. Snowfall, although extremely rare, sometimes occurs.

Places of interest include the Promenade des Anglais (the street running along the edge of the water), with strong nightlife and nice views, the Château, the Monuments aux Morts, the port, the Marché aux Fleurs (the flower market which runs every day of the week selling the best produce of the area), Old Nice and the Grand Hôtel Impérial.

The most important religious buildings include

  • the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral and the Saint-Jacques Church, both of the 17th century,
  • the Saint Nicolas Orthodox Cathedral and the Sainte Jeanne d'Arc Church, of the 20th century
  •  Interesting museums are the Musée des Beaux-Arts Jules Chéret, the Musée Masséna,
  • the Museum of Natural History,
  • the Naval Museum,
  • the Galerie des Ponchettes,
  • the Musée Chagall (Cimiez),
  • the Musée Matisse (arenas of Cimiez where one can also see Roman ruins) and
  • the Musée Terra-Amata.
Sports and entertainment facilities include the Stade du Rey, the Stade Charles-Ehrmann and the Palais Nikaia.
