Harwich in Essex ports ferries that sail to the Hook of Holland and Esbjerg in Denmark.  Stena Line sail to the Hook of Holland 4 times a day from Harwich, a journey which takes 6 ΒΌ hours.  DFDS Seaways sails to Esbjerg 3 times a week and takes 16 hours.  Copenhagen is then only a further 3 hours on one of the regular trains.  But Esbjerg itself by all accounts is well worth a look around!

One of the biggest growing ports in Britain if not Europe, is Hull.  Because of its geographical location and good linkage transport system it has a catchment of 40 million that are within a 4 hours distance. 
Leisure ships sail to Zeebrugee in Belgium and Rotterdam in Holland.  Both services are carried out once a day. 

Tyne Port up in Newcastle offers the most extensive line of trips to northern Europe and Scandinavia, it is one of the most modern and sophisticated passenger ferry ports in business.  DFDS Seaways provide daily crossings to 4 different Norwegians destinations, Gothenburg  and Amsterdam.  With it never being more popular to visit Scandinavia, Newcastle Port acts as the perfect gateway!

More routes to Holland and routes to Iceland!

HOliday Aswell as Hull, Rosyth Port sails to Zeebrugee in Holland.  This route crosses once a day and is ideally situated if you live near Edinburgh.  Aberdeen, Scotland's third city,  is based around it's working harbour which sees near 10,000 ships pass through it in a year. 
It is a gateway to the wonderous country of Iceland.

 If you are the adventurous type you can sail to Lerwick island in the North sea, from there to Torshavn island and finally then to Seydisfjord in Iceland.  If you do go, at least you'll have a good story to tell!
